The project suffered a number of delays due to the uncovering of residual brown asbestos left over from the original construction works in 1971.
The contract was finished to a very high specification. The Nave was completely refurbished with a new sprayed acoustic ceiling, ceramic floor tiles and decorated plaster walls. The internal woodwork was a blend of mahogany, walnut and maple hardwoods.
In line with most modern churches, St. Joseph's has a projector for hymns, state of the art sound system and a dedicated organ audio system. In keeping with the original form of the building the extension was built on a curve which presented challenges for both the design team and contractors.
The existing stained glass windows were removed and stored off site, later to be incorporated into the new triple glazed curtain wall system.
The high standard of finishes is a testament to the design team, akp contract staff and the patience of parishioners at St. Joseph's.
