Hospitality
2024 saw akp continue to develop their presence within the Hotel & Leisure sector with the award of the refurbishment of the Marriott Hotel in Glasgow.
Following the successful delivery of the sample room our brief was a hard and soft strip out and refit to almost the entire hotel, including the reception lobby, lounge bar, restaurant, WCs, meeting rooms, executive lounges, guestrooms, suites & corridors.
The city’s legacy in manufacturing – textiles, glass, and pottery – has informed the choice of materials and colour palette throughout the hotel. Throughout the city are an impressive collection of murals that adorn its buildings, adding colour and vibrancy to the cityscape. The artwork in the bedrooms is inspired by these murals and celebrate the city’s creativity and deep connection with people and places through art.
The reception desk features a striking ceramic plate mural inspired by the city’s ceramic industry while also paying homage to Glasgow landmarks such as the Finnieston Crane, SEC walkway, The Armadillo and the “squinty bridge”.
The refurbishment was carried out in two phases with the refurbishment of the public areas completed in September and the soft and hard refurbishment of the guestrooms handed over to programme in December 2024.
Environment Challenge
The extensive refit required a robust, responsive and environmentally focused waste solution. akp brought in the NWH Group to manage a complex array of construction debris, outdated furnishings and mixed materials, with the goal of maximising recycling and minimising environmental impact.
Key results at a glance:
- 87% of total waste recycled or recovered
- Daily collections to keep operations clean and smooth
- Real-time scheduling to adapt to evolving site demands
- On-site segregation to boost recycling rates and cut costs
- Just 1.13% of residual waste converted to energy, supporting local waste-to-energy schemes
Operational Challenge
The project demanded meticulous planning, particularly in managing works around a live hotel environment with 24/7 footfall. Seamless coordination with hotel management and strict adherence to programme and budget ensured successful delivery with feedback praising the team’s leadership, quality & commitment to excellence.
