akp were engaged as Principal Contractor to carry out the alterations, reconfiguration and fit out of 15 & 17 Cathkinview Place for Scotland’s leading housing group, The Wheatley Housing Group.

The scope of works was to extend and strip out the property approx. 249m2 in scale and thereafter undertake a fit out to turn the space from a day care centre to new office space, meeting rooms and housing interview suites.

The works comprise the strip out of the existing ceiling, walls and ceiling finishes together with all builders works, interior fit out, mechanical, electrical and ventilation installation.

It was recognised that the works were to proceed within an occupied residential building within close proximity to additional residential properties. This brought with it
specific risks which akp identified and mitigated from tender stage.
For example; Ensuring the safety of the works and limiting potential disturbance to neighbours.

akp Site Manager Derek Lawson built an strong line of communication with Wheatley Group Asset Planning Manager from the offset providing daily updates to him which were thereafter fed back to the residents.

Specific provisions for the continued security of the site during periods in which the external fabric of the building was opened, e.g. curtain walling enabling demolition works were established and maintained.

From the offset akp’s CSR Manager, Roz Malcolm was in communication with Wheatley Community Benefits Officer. A programme of Community Benefits was proposed by akp which included engagement with neighbouring Mount Florida Primary School which is located across the road. Thereafter akp undertook the following
initiatives:

  • akp Joiner and volunteers and donated materials to repair 12 picnic benches in the playground.
  • Labour and materials to prep and re-paint an external bike shed/shelter type structure.
  • 1 days labour and akp van to clear out and dispose of rubbish within a 60m2 playground storage area to allow the school to put the space to better use.
